I say it was GANGSTA, not insanity, that drove a luxury-loving woman to suffocate her Brooklyn handyman boyfriend with a plastic bag and duct tape once his money ran out. Raquel Glenn was sentenced to 17 years yesterday for the torture killing of Chiwa (Freeman) Chan, who tried to break off their relationship when he could no longer afford her lifestyle. Glenn, who met Chan in Lenox Hill Hospital’s psych ward, has insisted that voices in her head commanded her to kill Chan, who was found dead in a chair in his Bensonhurst home, his head covered with the bag and tape.
Assistant District Attorney Michelle Kaminsky told the judge that the real reason was greed. “The (state-appointed) psychiatrist was of the opinion the defendant committed this crime, not because of any psychiatric condition, but because she was angry at her current circumstances without any money and without any prospects of getting any – and she took that anger out on Freeman,” she said.
Glenn, 55, looked nothing like the beauty she was said to once be as she faced a Brooklyn Supreme Court judge yesterday. Her whole life, Glenn, who was raised in Washington, only dated wealthy businessmen, according to a law enforcement source. A smitten boyfriend even set up a trust fund for Glenn valued at over $100,000, but she burned through the money and he kicked her out in 2006. Soon after, Glenn checked into the psych ward at New York University Medical Center, claiming she was suicidal. In actuality it was simply because she had nowhere else to go, Kaminsky said. Two days later, she left NYU and went into Lenox Hill Hospital’s psych ward, where she met Chan who was being treated for bi-polar disorder.
Chan, 45, a longtime handyman at a Manhattan building, invited Glenn to move into his home on W. 7th St. in Bensonhurst. (Hmmm, not far from me) She accepted the offer, but soon started resenting her life with her working-class lover. “The defendant in her psych interview talked about this with contempt, how she had never been with a blue collar worker and her disappointment at ending up in the bowels of Brooklyn, coming from the upper East Side of Manhattan,” Kaminsky said. Glenn still frequented swanky salons and restaurants forcing Chan to take out a $50,000 home equity loan. When he couldn’t take her leeching any more in August 2008, and asked her to leave, she killed him. WOWZERS!
Despite the D.A.’s demand for a stiffer sentence and a letter from Chan’s five siblings in Hong Kong saying she deserved the death penalty or life in prison, Justice Matthew D’Emic sentenced Glenn to 17 years to life. Defense lawyer David Roche insisted she is remorseful.
