Diapers changed former child star Todd Bridges‘ life.
Gary Coleman‘s co-star on “Diff’rent Strokes” has revealed to Fox News that being treated like a baby made him decide to kick his addiction to cocaine.
“When you’re in your 20s and you have a big diaper on, and you were on a hit show, there has to be a change in your life,” Bridges told the news site.
The actor says he was “kept together” by the rigors of working on “Strokes.” He plunged into a downward spiral after the ’70s sitcom’s eight seasons were up.
“When the show got canceled is when my whole life fell apart because everything caught up with me,” Bridges revealed to Fox.
At the age of 12, Bridge says, he was molested by his publicist. His father took the alleged abuser’s side.
After several years of drug addiction, Bridges pleaded guilty to drug possession in 1993 and was given the choice of jail or rehab – he chose rehab.
Though Bridges eventually kicked his habit in rehab, a number of his peers did not have the same luck.
Corey Haim, who died last week of a suspected prescription drug overdose, spent most of his life battling substance abuse. The former child star also said he was abused as a young actor.
Bridges thinks Haim’s drug problems sprang from his inability to realize that he had a problem.
“One of the biggest things with Corey Haim was [that he] thought that he was just taking prescription medication, which if you take it according to what the doctor tells you, you’re going to be okay,” Bridges said.
“But if you take it the way an addict is going to take it – take a bunch of them and don’t listen to what the prescription bottle says – that’s what happened.”
Dana Plato, who played Bridges’ sister Kimberly on “Strokes,” died from a prescription drug overdose in 1999.
