Angelina Jolie “Too White” To Play ‘Cleopatra’?

Historians say Cleopatra probably looked more like this computer generated model (l.), than bombshell Angelina Jolie who is slated to play her in an upcoming film.

Of all the beautiful & talented African-American actresses, Angelina Jolie has landed the role of Cleopatra in an upcoming film. Scott Rudin made the announcement that he’s developing the biopic for & with Angelina, based on Stacy Schiff‘s book Cleopatra: A Life. And according to Schiff, “physically, she’s the perfect look.” REALLY? That’s funny because MY idea of the “perfect” look to possibly play Cleopatra would be Vivica A. Fox, Anika Noni Rose, Taraji P. Henson, Jada Pinkett Smith, Thandie Newton, Kimberly Elise, Regina King, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, Sharon Leal, Gabrielle Union, Garcelle Beauvais, Sophie Okonedo, Sanaa Lathan, Audra McDonald, Nia Long, Monica Calhoun, Victoria Rowell, Halle Berry, Paula Patton, need I go on? That’s 20 actresses right off the top, and we’re not even dealing with the yet to be discovered talent.

Well, obviously I’m not alone in my views. “I don’t care how full Angelina Jolie’s lips are, how many African children she adopts, or how bronzed her skin will become for the film,” Shirea Carroll wrote in an editorial for Essence.com. “I firmly believe this role should have gone to a Black woman…What’s next? A biopic on Sojourner Truth played by Betty White?” Ouch!

This isn’t the first time Jolie has found herself at the center of a debate about race in Hollywood. In 2007, she sparked serious controversy when she wore tinted make-up to play the role of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl‘s wife Marian, who is partly of African descent. Pearl herself took to the press to defend Jolie, telling Time Magazine, “It is not about the color of your skin. It is about who you are.” Sure You’re Right! And Robert Redford could play Malcolm X.

Now here’s where it gets interesting. Seeing how the backlash doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, they are now trying to make us believe that not only is there NO REAL PROOF as to what Cleopatra may have looked like, she may not have been that attractive. WHAT!!?? In fact, according to ABC News, Egyptologists insist that the legendary temptress, known for having used her beauty to seduce Roman Emperor Julius Caesar and general Mark Anthony, was actually “short, fat and plain.” Alright, so let me get this straight: when they thought they could pass her off as white, she was tall, slim & beautiful. But the minute they saw black America was pushing for an accurate depiction of the truth, she’s short, fat & plain. GTFOH!!!

People, check the dynamic of the double standard. And they wonder why black women stay angry? smfh.

Tyler Perry Wants a Doctor's Note from Mariah Carey

After Mariah Carey dropped out of his latest movie, an adaptation of Ntozake Shange’s 1975 play For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, less than a week before filming was to begin, director Tyler Perry had to cut short his vacation and find a replacement. “I said, ‘What? You’re kidding me?,’ ” Perry writes in a lighthearted new letter to his fans. “It’s five days before she has to go to work; nobody does that. We have a deal.”

Jetting back to Atlanta where the movie is filming, he selected Thandie Newton to fill Carey’s role. (She will join Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington and Janet Jackson in the cast.) Perry also discovered that the singer’s doctor was to blame for her sudden departure.  “I was told that we got a call, saying that even though our deal was done, she had been advised by her doctor not to do the film,” Perry writes. “I said, ‘What? You know I want a doctor’s note, don’t you? LOL.”

As pregnancy rumors surround Carey, her would-be director won’t buy into any speculation “All I know,” he writes, “is that I’m waiting just like the rest of the world to find out what happened.”
