Reel Talk Movies and Television Reviews Empire Season 2 Ep1

Television Review: Empire

Has the “Lyon” Lost its roar? I’d say yes if Creator Lee Daniels does not correct this on going problem that has plagued this show since its birth.

Everyone was excited about the new hit music/drama series Empire when it debuted last year on FOX. The star power, the drama and of course the music. All factors in the huge success of the show last season, and only 1 of those factors have been consistent. The music has been mediocre at best and the drama, well it’s just been dramatic but not the least bit powerful, or comprehensive.  Last season the show built up to a 2-hour who’s who of cameos finale full of NOTHING!

Unfortunately Empire has followed suit in the season 2 premiere. We pick up 4 months after the incarceration of Luscious Lyon and although they are still standing, the record company is apparently in shambles. Jamal is struggling to keep up as CEO and recording artist. Hakeem is battling his feelings about his father killing his uncle Bunky and turning the Empire over to his older brother Jamal. While Andre STILL struggles to find his identity and himself, waking up in cold sweats from his nightmares of killing his uncle Vernon (a crime not even in question at the moment).

Cookie is doing what she has been doing since she got out of prison, trying to take over the company.  A coup d’état to be exact, She is plotting with Andre and Hakeem to snatch the Empire while Luscious is incarcerated and seemingly helpless.  However Jamal (although distracted with his lack of music production, love life and running the company) under the instruction of his father foils their plan as if he was one of those “meddling kids from Scooby Doo”. The episode was as predictable as it was cliché. Staying true to the formula that has worked thus far, a bunch of cameos from big stars, unrealistic castings and virtually NO character development and even LESS storytelling.

The bottom line is this show had lots of promise to it. However I feel creator Lee Daniels is more interested in promoting his Gay Agenda and dazzling you with eye candy than actually tell a great story.  He has already admitting to selling out if he feels it necessary, so I guess that’s what he is feeling, more POWER to him. (Pun intended)

Reel Talk Movie and TV Reviews Quantico Sunday on ABC

Displaying 1200.2x1.jpg

It’s been a while since I sat down and watched a show LIVE. With the Internet, Netflix, Amazon, and all the interactive TV sites it’s easy to watch at your convenience. Furthermore it’s been a very long time since I turned away from Sunday Night Football on NBC to catch a premiere of a new show (not since the premiere of AMC’s The Walking Dead back in Oct of 2010). I was very eager to see how this new show from creator Josh Safran (Gossip Girl, Smash) was going to play out. So with my residual chips and dips in hand (from earlier Sunday NFL activities) I turned away from Broncos vs. Lions and tuned into ABC, and I was MADE THE RIGHT DECISION! Quantico was everything I hope it would be and even a bit more.

Everyone who knows me will tell you that I am VERY Critical when it comes to storytelling and character development in television as well as film. This show takes a page out of the Shonda Rhimes Book of successful storytelling, but managed to keep its own identity. This show feels like a cross between How To Get Away With Murder, and Graceland, two shows I really enjoyed watching, however it seemed to be a little easier to follow the story than Ms. Rhimes’ hit show.

The series’ protagonist is Alex Parrish (played by the gorgeous Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra), who is suspected of committing a terroristic attack. Flashbacks tell her story and the ones of her fellow recruits at the FBI Academy in Quantico.

Chopra is witty, sexy, and confident as she portrays the complex yet gifted Alex, you are introduced to her darkest secrets as well as the secrets of her classmate’s backgrounds. Josh Safran takes you on back using the infamous Now Famous “Flashback inside a flashback” technique (Thanks Ms. Rhimes), chronicling all of his diverse character’s reasons for wanting to become an FBI agent.  One very interesting and touching storyline is the Character of Shelby Wyatt (played by Johanna Braddy), Shelby is a young blond determined to make it as an FBI agent. Her parents were killed as passengers of one of the ill-fated airplanes on 9/11.  In an interrogation exorcise scene, it its revealed that she carries around a small piece of metal supposedly from the wreckage of her parents airliner as reminder of why she is here at Quantico.  I thought that was a bold, clever and heartfelt move by Safran as we just entered the 14th anniversary of the tragic 9/11 attacks.

Tate Ellington as Simon Asher, a virgin homosexual who seems to use his wit as his ultimate weapon, displays another good performance; he is definitely the “Colombo” of the class. Also The mysterious Muslim women Nimah Anwar (Played by Yasmine Al Masri )  Offers another “red herring” to the storyline, and it’s revealed at the end of the episode that she’s “double” the mystery (Spoiler alert). Add all that up along with Jake McLaughlin as double agent Ryan Booth, Josh Hopkins (Cougar town) as the alcoholic and troubled past Special Agent Liam O’Connor, and Aunjanue Ellis as the Mentor and class teacher Miranda Shaw, we have a recipe for a great ride. Quantico airs Sunday’s at 10pm EST on ABC.  Rating:  4 of 5 Reels.
